Stop Eating Cheap Candy

Listening to gossip is like eating cheap candy;  do you want junk like that in your belly?

Proverbs 18:8, MSG

We are living in a world where we are surrounded by so much information. Social media was somehow filled with various contents that would either build or break someone. It is filled with gossips that greatly disrespect other people. Not knowing that listening to those things is like eating cheap candy. It’s actually a junk that would somehow destroy our soul. That’s why this proverb is a great reminder for us to focus on things that matter to God.

Entertaining information that destroys someone’s life is not a good thing. Some may find pleasure in doing it, but wait until you become the subject of those gossipers. Only then will you realize how hard and painful it is to deal with them. It’s not good to judge people that you never really know. Before you make any conclusion or even talk about someone’s mistake or lapses, try to listen first to their stories. That’s when you will realize that what you have in mind is so far from the truth.

Listening to negative things that people are saying will eventually affect your soul. It would destroy your hope and keep you from believing in God’s promises. That’s why be mindful of the information that you receive. Do not follow those people who love to judge others because you might end up like them. Instead, follow those individuals who would teach you to understand and love others.

This is a very practical reminder that we all need. Sometimes, when we are too caught up with what’s happening around us, we tend to highlight those things that we feel like entertaining but not necessarily beneficial to us. It’s very sad that there are people who find joy in sharing content or information that could potentially destroy someone. Remember, you are the light of this world. Be a bearer of God’s love. Stop eating cheap candy. It’s not good for your soul.

From then on, every time you receive information that greatly disrespects someone, choose to pause and ask yourself if what you are doing is still right. Remember what God said in His word. Stop sharing that information and do the right thing. Instead of thinking about the bad thing that happened, choose to pray for those who are involved. Ask God to strengthen them, and may He fill their hearts with hope. After that, pray for your soul that God would teach you how to manage what you just heard and that He may guide you on what to do.

Prayer: Father God, thank you for giving us the chance to know you. As we live in this world, please give us a heart that’s willing to listen to your voice and believe in your words. May we learn to fix our eyes on you and not on the negative things we hear from others. Please help us share your love instead of spreading gossip. In Jesus’ Name, we pray, amen.
