What It Means To Be Wise

Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.

Proverbs 19:20, NIV

Wise people know how to listen. Sometimes, others would only consider someone as wise if they could figure things out on their own. They somehow believed that wisdom only comes from within. But according to proverbs, people who are counted as wise are those who listen to advice and accept discipline. This means they don’t just rely on their own understanding. Instead, they treat other people’s advice as important to them.

We are living in a world where people would rarely listen. It is sad to say that some of us are so occupied with the things that we know and experience that we tend to disregard other people’s thoughts and perspectives. We take pride in our ideas, thinking that what we have in mind is enough. But then, in this verse, we are reminded of what being wise truly means.

Sometimes, you will receive wisdom when you listen to the right people. It means we should learn to accept that we don’t know everything. God loves to guide and lead us. He wanted us to learn about His kingdom. But the reality is, it’s hard to know His wisdom if we will only rely on ourselves. We need to learn how to seek help. God usually sends the right people to assist us. It’s just that we somehow fail to recognize them because we are too focused on our own knowledge and understanding.

Aside from that, the verse also reminded us that wise people accept discipline. This is not an easy thing to do, especially when God would ask us to surrender our pride. It takes dying and a lot of humility. But the good thing about this is our character will surely be molded. If we are just patient enough to go through the pruning process, God will give us precious and priceless wisdom in the end.

Prayer: Father God, Thank you so much for giving us the chance to receive your wisdom. We pray that you will give us a humble heart willing to obey your word. Please give us listening ears willing to accept corrections. Pour out your love upon us so that we may never forget that you are the source of every wisdom that we receive. This we ask and pray, in Jesus’ name, amen.
