Why is it Hard to Surrender?
When painful memories try to dominate my thoughts, when tears keep flowing, and when fear wants to reign, people will often say that I need to surrender.
“Lift them up to God.”
“Stop carrying the pain.”
“Let go.”
“Surrender.”
These words are so easy to utter but so hard to do. How I wish I could easily dictate my heart not to be afraid. How I wish it was just a switch that I could easily turn on or off. If only things were not that complicated.
It’s hard. It’s not easy to let go, especially when you want to control everything that is happening around you. It’s painful to surrender. It’s like you are killing your pride, and you humbly accept the truth that you need God’s guidance.
Allowing God to move felt scary at first, especially when your relationship with Him is not that solid. Questions will try to fill your mind.
“What if He will leave me empty and broken?”
“What if I will experience more pain?”
“What if things get worse?”
“What if things will never be the same?”
Surrender
You will find yourself doubting if what you are doing is right or wrong. When the word ‘surrender’ is not part of your system, you will always find a way to hold on to the temporary things that you thought will make you feel happy in the end. In short, you will have a lot of adjustments.
However, if you just patiently go through the process, you will realize that you will only receive the fullness of God’s grace the moment you accept the fact that you badly need Him. It’s when you learn to surrender. It’s difficult to do it at first, but later on, you will find rest in His promises. Your trust in Him will grow stronger. Your relationships will never be the same.
All you need to do is take the first step, even if it’s not comfortable.
Just let the pain sink in. Cry if you want to. Release all your fears and do it anyway. After the uncomfortable process, there’s a beautiful gift that’s waiting for you, and it’s called faith.
