We Are Commanded To Testify about Jesus And Become His Witnesses
Peter said these words while he was in the house of Cornelius, a centurion man who lived in Caesarea. He proclaimed the gospel in front of Cornelius’ family and relatives. In this particular verse, it is important to note the words that Peter used. He said that Jesus commanded his disciples to preach to the people and to testify that He is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.
In other words, sharing the gospel and proclaiming Jesus wasn’t just a favor that He hoped His disciples would do. Instead, it was a command. It was an order from our Savior to preach His name all throughout the ends of the earth. In Matthew 28:19, Jesus gave his disciples the great commission, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
At the same time, in Acts 1:8, before Jesus ascended to heaven, he said to his disciples, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Peter did exactly what Jesus commanded. He became Jesus’ witness and testified about who Jesus is in front of the Gentiles.
Just like Jesus’ disciples, we are also commanded to testify and become His witnesses. Again, this is not just a favor, but an order from our living King. Remember that we are also called to preach the good news we receive. We are here to share Jesus with those who are broken and wounded. May we have the courage to follow His commands, and let’s remember that it’s one of the best expressions of worship. Seeing people coming back to the Kingdom of God is one of His desires. It’s His will to bring heaven here on earth.
Prayer: Father God, thank you for reminding us about our great commission. Please give us a heart that’s willing to share your love and grace. May you keep the fire burning so that we may have the eagerness to proclaim the gospel and testify about your goodness and power. We pray for the strength to overcome our fears inside. Please continue to teach us how to become a vessel of your love so that more people will come to know you. This we ask, in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
